Silicon carbide (SiC) is made of quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal charcoal), wood chips (the need to add salt when producing green silicon carbide) and other raw materials through resistance furnace smelting. Silicon carbide also exists in nature, a rare mineral, Moissanite. Silicon carbide, also known as carbon silica. In the contemporary C, N, B and other non-oxide high-tech refractory raw materials, silicon carbide is the most widely used, the most economical kind, can be called grit or refractory sand. At present, China's industrial production of silicon carbide is divided into two kinds of black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide.

Specification:

Silicon carbide black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide are two commonly used basic varieties, are α-SiC. ① black silicon carbide with about 95% SiC, its toughness is higher than green silicon carbide, mostly used for processing low tensile strength materials such as glass, ceramics, stone, refractory materials, cast iron and non-ferrous metals. ② Green silicon carbide with SiC about 97% or more, since the sharpness is good, mostly used for processing cemented carbide, titanium alloy and optical glass, but also for honing cylinder liner and precision grinding high-speed steel cutting tools.

In addition there are cubic silicon carbide, which is obtained by a special process of yellow-green crystal, used to make the abrasive tools for superfinishing bearings, the surface roughness can be processed from Ra32 ~ 0.16 micron Ra0.04 ~ 0.02 micron.
